Setting up a custom tracking domain is one of the easiest ways to improve your email deliverability for broadcast and transactional email campaigns.
What is a Tracking Domain?
A tracking domain is the domain used in JangoMail open tracking and click tracking. It is appended to your links and inserted into your HTML after your message is sent through JangoMail.
It is recommended that you set up a custom tracking domain, based on your organization's domain.
If you do not set up a custom tracking domain, a JangoMail-system default domain is used.
Why a Custom Tracking Domain is Important
Setting up a custom tracking domain allows your domain to establish its own reputation with receiving email servers. By setting up your own, you ensure higher email deliverability.
Using your own custom tracking domain allows your emails to be branded around your own organization, and not JangoMail.
How to Set Up a Custom Tracking Domain
- Choose the domain and subdomain to use for your custom tracking domain
- For example: If your domain is browniekitchen.com, then setting up "x.browniekitchen.com" or "track.browniekitchen.com" makes for the perfect tracking domain
- An entry needs to be made in your DNS (Domain Name Server)
- The technical person that manages your domain's DNS should make this change
- Create a CNAME record for your chosen domain to point to jngo.net
- Important Note: If your domain has a CAA record, you will need to add Let's Encrypt. If Let's Encrypt is not authorized, JangoMail will not be able to enable HTTPS for your domain.
- Enter your custom tracking domain in JangoMail
- Go to Settings → Tracking → Tracking Domain
- Enter your domain into the custom tracking domain field and click Save Tracking Domain. This step will automatically enable HTTPs for your custom tracking domain. If your custom tracking domain has been successfully created in your domain provider's DNS (step 2), it will successfully save. The confirmation will state "HTTPS is enabled for this tracking domain!"
- If there is an issue with your custom tracking domain, you will get an error upon attempting to save
Once successfully completed, your custom tracking domain will appear in the URL used by JangoMail for click-tracked links, in the open tracking-pixel reference, and in other places throughout your HTML-email campaigns.
**Important:** If you have any JangoMail-generated links in previously created campaigns that you copy to create new campaigns or use as templates, make sure that the tracking domain is updated in these links. New campaigns will automatically use your new tracking domain. For instance, for the unsubscribe link, it may be: http://x.jmtd.com/u.z?***uniqueid**** Make sure to update this to be: http://your_tracking_domain/u.z?***uniqueid**** Other JangoMail-generated links to update are: View-as-Webpage |
A custom tracking domain is one of several steps you should take to fully set up your email deliverability. |
